About Scythia Jazz Band

Exciting new eclectic style jazz, funk and blues band - We are a flexible two to six piece band now touring Bristol and the South West. Experienced musicians and performers bringing a range of backgrounds together to produce a flexible set .

Performing a variety of sounds from mainstream modern Jazz of the likes of Miles Davis to a varied hand-picked selection of more modern covers in a jazz funk style such as Steely Dan, Plan B, ZZ top, Jill Scott and many more!

The origin of the band name isn't very deep or particularly meaningful but is derived from one of the band member's ancestry - A Persian tribe called the Scythians however we prefer to pronounce the band name 'Sky-the-ah' as it sounds more 'Jazz' - we hope you don't mind!

Demos

We have recorded a few demo tracks in our studio so that you can get a feel for the styles we offer. We have picked a few tracks we like playing but we are versatile and can vary our programme to suit your needs so please have a chat about what would suit you best!

The Scythia Jazz Band

We are lucky enough to have a fantastic line-up of musicians who have had a wide range of experience;

Shairon Lloyd - Vocals

Shairon Lloyd - Vocals

Shairon's love of jazz and blues led to a move away from her operatic training years ago. Music lessons started age 4 and have included violin, guitar, piano and percussion, but it is singing jazz and blues that brings true happiness, especially now with her wonderful fellow musicians in Scythia Jazz.

Pete Neale

Pete Neale - Tenor & Alto Sax

Pete has been playing saxes for 10 years he takes every opportunity to play wherever and whenever he can. Likes ballads just as much as the fast modal Davis stuff. Favourite players are Art Pepper, Lee Morgan and Animal from the Muppets. Wishes he could sing but is more than happy to leave it to Shairon. Adores children but couldn't eat a whole one. Usually annoyingly cheerful.

Michael Loader

Michael Loader - Trumpet & Flugel Horn

After early meanderings from to the primary school choir, to the top notch recorder group, to the violin ensemble, to trumpet with Satchmo and Herb Alpert, to the teenage musings of Miles (and catching him twice in London)... via wind bands, marching bands, brass bands and orchestras... Michael finally jumped into the arena of Jazz pretty much as a 'grown up' (well we all try). Known more for his 'word of mouth' (as a storyteller and writer) rather than his 'note of bell' Michael has moved and grooved his way into the many styles that Jazz can offer through jams, bands and workshops, including latin, accompanying songs, bop, 50's and beyond

Matt Bacon

Matt Bacon - Keys

An established pianist in and around the Bristol area, Matt is happy playing in duos and small ensembles right through to big band jazz. Taking Inspiration from the Godfather of Soul – Mr. James Brown and jazz masters like Herbie Hancock and Count Basie, Matt's solid comping and riffing soloing provides the soul and unrelenting groove to compliment the Scythia rhythm section.

Spencer Westwood

Spencer Westwood - Bass

'Everything Strings'. Starting guitar and piano at a very early age with a brief daliance with violin, Spencer has been playing guitar and bass all over the world for the last three decades. From Rock and Punk to Jazz and Funk with a sprinkling of Fusion on the side, his experience of many different and eclectic Bass styles adds a flavour all of its own to Scythia.

Jehan (JJ) Shaw

Jehan (JJ) Shaw - Drums

Although starting out on the Piano from age 6 and then learning the trombone a few years later, JJ has settled on the drums later in life and found it fits like a glove. The musical background gives a great base of understanding and helps make his drumming gel with the rest of the band. WIth a degree in sound engineering, JJ also manages is able to ensure the band provides a great sounding PA for any size venue.
